Twelve pastors from the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe have resigned with immediate effect, citing what they describe as a departure from biblical teachings following the church’s decision to embrace same-sex relationships.

The pastors announced their resignations in Harare on Friday, protesting the denomination’s recent decision to remove its long-standing condemnation of homosexuality.

Speaking on behalf of the group during a press conference, Reverend Forbes Matonga said the shift no longer aligns with the fundamental Christian beliefs they uphold.

“Now your beloved church fully embraces this sin and even celebrates it as God’s gift,” Rev. Matonga said.

The resignations come in response to last year’s General Conference of the United Methodist Church in the United States where church leadership voted to revise its Book of Discipline.

The updated doctrine now recognizes same-sex marriages, among other changes that some members view as contrary to biblical teachings.

Pastor Maria Masamba voiced concerns over the broader implications of the policy shift, questioning its impact on families and communities.

“I’m not talking about being modern or progressive, I’m talking about the very fabric of our society,” she said.

“If we start to normalize homosexual relationships within the church, what does that mean for the future of our families, our communities, and the world?

“It’s not about being old-fashioned or close-minded, it’s about preserving the human race,” Masamba said

She added “I truly believe that allowing homosexuality in the church is not a step forward, but a step backwards – one that could have devastating consequences for generations to come.”

Despite their departure, Rev. Matonga said the pastors would not engage in any conflict with the church and would leave its properties intact.
