Zimbabwe is grappling with an escalating drug crisis as alarming new data reveals that narcotic use among young people is rising despite a national emergency declaration in 2023.

A report by the Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN) highlights the severity of the crisis, with findings from five provinces showing widespread substance abuse among youth, particularly in urban centers like Harare’s Mbare and Bulawayo’s Makokoba suburb.

“The research paints a grim picture, young people, some as early as 12 years old, are turning to drugs, and the numbers are only increasing,” said ZCLDN director Wilson Box

A staggering 80% of respondents in the study admitted to starting drug use in their teenage years, with economic hardships, peer pressure, and social challenges cited as major contributors.

Drug manufacturing hubs in Mbare have also made narcotics more accessible and affordable.

ZCLDN is urging the government to act swiftly, calling for harm reduction programs, the establishment of drop-in centers, and targeted youth interventions.

Mr Box stressed that without immediate action, Zimbabwe could face an irreversible public health catastrophe.

According to a study, 40% of drug users surveyed were female, yet many hesitate to seek help due to stigma and fear of discrimination.

“These women are suffering in silence, there is a lack of specialized treatment programs, and societal judgment forces them to hide their struggles,” he said

The findings also reveal that many women, especially in high-risk areas like Acadia and Nguboyenja, start using narcotics in their early teens. With limited access to support services, many spiral deeper into addiction.

ZCLDN is calling for urgent interventions, including gender-sensitive treatment programs, harm reduction initiatives, and stronger community support.

Without these measures, women will continue to be an underserved and vulnerable demographic in Zimbabwe’s drug epidemic.
